Using The Map
How do I zoom in or out?
Using Zoom Bar
The Zoom Bar is located on the left side of the Map. Clicking higher up the zoom bar zooms in, while clicking lower down will zoom out. You can also zoom by using the scroll wheel on your mouse.
How do I pan or center map?
Click and drag anywhere within the map to move the map center.
How do I get info for crime locations?
Crime locations are indicated by colored dots on the map. Move the map cursor directly over one of the crime locations. Leave the cursor in this position for a few seconds (you do not need to click). An information box will open indicating the date, time, crime type, premises and address for each crime near the cursor location.
What are multi-crime locations?
Crime locations are indicated by dots on the map. Multiple crimes at the same location are indicated by a larger circle around the crime location with a number indicating the number of crimes.
How do I go to a specific address or zipcode?
An address search is provided within the "Find Address" tab. You can search by entering street address, zipcode, or both.
How do I find crimes for a specific date?
Through the "Crime Setup" tab, can change the date range by hovering over the "From" or "To" links and clicking on a day from the resulting drop down calendar.
How do I map crimes of a specific type?
Through the "Crime Setup" tab, you can add or remove crime types by hovering over the "Crime Types" link.
How do I map crimes for specific premises?
Through the "Crime Setup" tab, you can add or remove crime types by hovering over the "Premises" link.
How do I get list of crimes on a map?
Through the "Tools" tab, click the "List Crimes On Map" link to view full details of all crimes within the map area.
Account Information
Can I Change my Username/Password?
CrimeHouston presently does not allow you to change his username or password. If you feel either has to be changed, email us with the following information:
Current Username
Current Password
Your registered email address
New Username and/or New Password.
I forgot my password or username!
Near the login box, click "Forgot Password". This will present you with the password recovery dialog. After completing this dialog, you will be emailed your username and password. If you are unable to recover your username or password using this method, email us with the following information:
Complete Name
Your registered email address

How much does it cost?
Pricing information can be obtained here.
What are the payment options?
CrimeHouston.com currently uses PayPal for credit card payment. We do not store any credit card information from member accounts.
Can I get a refund if I drop CH?
Signing up for membership is a time-based agreement, therefore we do not provide the option to move to a smaller plan.
Errors
How can there be errors?
CrimeHouston makes every effort to provide accurate information. Errors can arise for several reasons. CrimeHouston considers a mapped crime location in error if it is off by 500 ft. We believe our accuracy is above 98% for all mapped locations.
Possible Sources of errors are: Houston Police Department Crime Incident Data
  • Typos
  • Incorrect spelling of street information
  • Incomplete or ambiguous street names
Census Bureau Mapping Files (used to generate our maps)
  • Inaccurate street locations on map
  • Inaccurate street names
Geocoding (converting address to map coordinates)
  • Correctly geocoding streets with multiple names ( I-10/Katy Freeway/West Freeway)
  • Accuracy of address number ranges
  • Automatic correction of misspelled street names - (West Lop to West Loop/ ChimneyRock to Chimney Rock)
  • Same address in multiple city areas.  (100 Main St - Houston/Humble/Webster)
How can I request crime mapping error corrections?
If you encounter and error that you would like us to correct, email us with the following information:
  • Provide all existing data for the crime incident in question (Type, Date, Time, Address, Premises)
  • Provide corrected information including corrected Latitude and Longitude of the location (29.669831,-95.528364)
  • Include Your Username and Password and Phone Number

General Information
How large is the database behind CH?
CrimeHouston's crime data consists of approximately 10,000 crime incident records each month starting at Jan. 1, 2005.
Where does crime data come from?
Crime data is public information and is published monthly by the Houston Police Department.
How often is data updated?
HPD released data on a monthly basis. Crimehouston will make every attempt to include this data by the end of the following month.
What are the system requirements for this site?
Cookies must be enabled and the security setting should be Medium or lower
Supported Browsers: Best viewed with Internet Explorer or Firefox.
Screen Resolution: Minimum 1024x768
